Consumer durables industry going strong
The good news about the consumer durables market in India is that it is expected to double at 14.8 per cent CAGR to reach US$ 12.5 billion in FY15 from US$ 6.3 billion in FY10. The bad news is that not enough trained people are available to fill the job vacancies. But more about that later.

The upswing for this industry is due to several factors. Mainly because more and more young people are earning higher incomes. With no liabilities or responsibilities early in their life, the disposable component of young peoples’ incomes has been on the rise. This disposable income finds a channel in the demand for consumer durables in India.

This trend in India is set to continue even as other factors like increasing urbanisation, a growing middle class, and changing lifestyles changes demand in the sector. Increasing electrification in rural areas, marginally improved penetration of internet connectivity and wide usage of online sales would also aid growth in demand. Thus it is expected that by FY15, rural and semi-urban markets are likely to contribute a majority of consumer durables’ sales.

Yet another encouraging reason for the consumer durables industry to stay in expansion mode is that the Government of India has allowed 100 per cent foreign direct investment in electronics hardware-manufacturing under the automatic route. Further, the Electronic Hardware Technology Park (EHTP) Scheme provides benefits, such as duty waivers and tax incentives, to companies which replace certain imports with local manufacturing.
